How They Work: The Hydrodynamic Wedge

 

Unlike plain bearings with a fixed lubricating film, a Tilting Pad Bearing is constructed from multiple (typically 4 to 8) individual pads arranged circumferentially around the shaft. The key principle is:

  1. Independent Pad Movement: Each pad is free to pivot or "tilt" on a central or offset pivot point.

  2. Self-Generating Wedge: As the shaft rotates, it drags the lubricating oil (or fluid) into the converging gap between the shaft and the leading edge of the pad. This tilting motion automatically forms a highly stable, self-adjusting hydrodynamic wedge of lubricant under each pad.

  3. Dynamic Stiffness and Damping: This fluid wedge provides powerful dynamic stiffness and damping that actively stabilizes the rotor, effectively suppressing undesirable vibrations and rotor instabilities over a wide range of operating speeds.
