BIMETAL/ TRIMETAL BEARINGS

The Foundation of Reliable Rotating Machinery

Why Choose Bimetal and Trimetal Bearings?

Bimetal and Trimetal bearings are essential components in high-performance rotating machinery, offering an ideal balance of strength, conformability, and corrosion resistance. They are specifically engineered to handle the demands of heavy loads, high speeds, and harsh operating environments, ensuring extended service life and reduced maintenance for your equipment.

Whether you're operating an internal combustion engine, a compressor, or large industrial machinery, choosing the right bearing material is critical. These multi-layer designs provide a superior solution compared to a single, monolithic material.

Understanding the Structure

The terms Bimetal and Trimetal refer to the number of distinct layers used to create the final bearing structure.

Bimetal Bearings (Two Layers)

Bimetal bearings consist of two primary layers:

  1. Steel Backing (Outer Layer): This forms the structural integrity of the bearing. It provides high mechanical strength and allows for a secure fit into the housing.

  2. Bearing Lining (Inner Layer): A layer of softer, anti-friction material, often a Copper-Lead alloy, Babbitt or Aluminum-Tin alloy. This layer is responsible for the bearing’s performance, offering excellent fatigue strength, conformability, and embeddability.

Trimetal Bearings (Three Layers)

Trimetal bearings are designed for the most demanding applications, offering an additional layer of protection and performance:

  1. Steel Backing (Outer Layer): Provides the necessary structural strength.

  2. Bronze/Copper-Lead Intermediate Layer: This acts as a high-strength bond layer and a stable platform. It offers superior fatigue resistance under high dynamic loads.

  3. Babbitt Overlay (Inner Layer): A very thin, soft layer made of a Tin or Lead alloy. This overlay is critical for:

    • Embeddability: Allowing foreign particles to embed without scratching the journal.

    • Conformability: The ability to instantly adjust to slight shaft misalignment.

    • Anti-Seizure Properties: Providing a protective surface during temporary boundary lubrication conditions.
